As we struggle through this depressing state of a world gone haywire, we hear on a daily basis how much produce, dairy products and meat is going to waste.
Listening to the farmers, ranchers and dairymen, the problem is common amongst them: logistics.
Logistics, that is, meaning the need to get their product from point A to point B in a controlled, logical, economical way. I have an idea that might be the answer.
Across America, from small towns to big cities, there is a business sitting there just begging to be tapped into. That business is the truck and trailer rental business.
The industry includes such giants as Ryder, U-Haul, Penske, Hertz and Budget.
Fuel costs are at record lows. Those thousands of idle vehicles could be used to relieve some of the trucking industry’s burden, by picking up and distributing overflow.
Drivers could be recruited from the ranks of thousands of homeless veterans. These men and women, as well as others in dire straits could be hired and paid to drive these vehicles, delivering needed supplies to food banks and homeless shelters.
The majority of these vehicles do not require a CDL (commercial driving license).
I’m sure that I am way “out of the box” here, but drastic times sometimes demand drastic measures.
