Roger Wayne Havens, aka Gary Havens, 38, who last month leapt from a Tallahatchie County deputy sheriff’s pickup truck traveling at highway speed on I-55, has been ordered to serve nine years and 273 days in prison.
During a Feb. 22 hearing at the Panola County Courthouse in Sardis, Circuit Judge Jimmy McClure granted the state’s petition to revoke Havens’ previous post-release supervision, which had initially allowed him to avoid incarceration through participation in the drug court program for convictions of burglary of a building and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.
After failing to comply with drug court, and skipping out for months, Havens was captured Feb. 3 in south Mississippi. He was being transported back to Tallahatchie when he allegedly tried to escape by jumping from the moving truck, sustaining multiple injuries.
