CASCILLA — Roy Edward “Kilroy” Winters, age 83, of Cascilla, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 15, surrounded by the love of his family, just one day after celebrating his 83rd birthday.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, at North Church of God, formerly North Shady Grove Church of God, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday evening, 5-8 p.m., August 17, at the church.
Born on August 14, 1943, in Tallahatchie County, Roy was the son of Luther Edward Winters and Sarah Mildred Allbritton Winters. A hardworking and dedicated man, Roy gave 40 years and 7 months of service to Lyon, Rockwell, Randall Textron, and ICE Industries.
Roy found great joy in the simple pleasures of life — deer hunting, crappie fishing, and camping. Through his many camping trips, he formed lasting friendships with people from near and far. He was a familiar and comforting presence in his neighborhood, often found sitting on his beloved front porch, faithfully keeping watch over the place he called home. It was there that Roy earned the affectionate title of “the watchman.”
To those who knew him, Roy was unforgettable. Known lovingly as “Uncle Roy” and “Kilroy,” he had a personality and presence that made people feel at home. He lived life fully, treasured the people around him, and leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will continue to bring smiles to all who loved him. Roy attended worship at North Church of God and Trinity Holiness Church.
He is survived by his wife, to whom he was deeply devoted for 61 years, Mae Winters; his pride and joy – his daughter, Vikkie Lewallen (Johnny); two grandchildren, Johnny Lewallen, Jr. (Brandi) and Daniel Lewallen; six great-grandchildren, Bentley Lewallen, Mel Surrette, Ryeley Lewallen, Lilly Surrette, Addie Lewallen and Brady Surrette; sisters, Annell Franklin (Robert), Vivian Blount (Bill), Sonia Hill (Jerry) and Cynthia Winters; brothers, Charlie Gene Winters, Merrill Winters (Judy) and Radford Winters (Brenda); and a host of nieces and nephews.
Roy was welcomed into Heaven by his parents and three brothers, Terry Lewis Winters, Kenneth Earl “Big Dave” Winters and Clarence Wayne Winters.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers include Clay Davis, Bentley Lewallen, Daniel Lewallen, Johnny Lewallen, Johnny Lewallen, Jr. and Bryan Kendall. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Standridge and Brady Surrette.
