With two weeks remaining until this year’s qualifying deadline, two more people have added their names to the list of candidates for local offices in Tallahatchie County, including a ninth seeking the position of sheriff, according to records on file late Tuesday at the circuit clerk’s office in Charleston.
Those filing a Qualifying Statement of Intent and paying fees to seek local office within the past week, listed in the chronological order that paperwork was filed at the circuit clerk’s offices in Charleston and Sumner, were:
» Donnie L. Tenner, 50, of 23 N. Sabine St., Charleston, Democrat, for sheriff
» Jonathan D. Taylor Sr., 40, of 508 S. Franklin St., Charleston, Democrat, for District 3 supervisor
Tenner becomes the ninth person to file qualifying papers for sheriff. Others include Maurice D. Brooks, Michael German, Jimmy Fly, Rodzinski Weekly, Brandon R. Hodges, John A. Page Sr., Jean Marie Hooper and Clifton Earl Harris.
The deadline to enter races is Friday, March 1. Party primaries will be conducted Aug. 6, and the general election is set for Nov. 5.
All prospective candidates must file a Qualifying Statement of Intent.
Candidates seeking a party nomination for chancery clerk, circuit clerk, constable, coroner, county attorney, justice court judge, sheriff, supervisor and tax assessor/collector must pay a $100 qualifying fee.
Independent candidates for these offices must pay a $100 qualifying fee in addition to submitting a petition signed by a stipulated number of registered voters. Properly formatted petition forms are available from the circuit clerk’s offices in Charleston and Sumner.
Independent candidates for chancery clerk, circuit clerk, coroner, county attorney, sheriff and tax assessor/collector must present a petition with at least 50 signatures.
Independent candidates for constable, justice court judge and supervisor must present a petition with at least 15 certifiable signatures.
