STRIDER — Strider Academy student athletes traveled to Clarksdale on Wednesday, April 6, to compete in the Lee Invitational.
All teams were competing in Division 2 for the track meet which had them going against student athletes from the host school Lee, as well as Winona Christian, Delta, North Delta, St. Joe, Coahoma AHS and North Sunflower.
The Strider junior high boys ended the day with 64 points, which was good enough for a second-place finish in Division 2.
Stuart Denman earned a first-place ribbon in the pole vault by clearing 8’6” while Austin Miller earned the second-place ribbon by clearing 7’6”. Gage Burt finished second in the long jump with a leap of 17’2”, while Hayden Nelson got third with a jump of 16’8”. Wade Lashley earned a third-place ribbon in the triple jump with a jump of 32’6”. Nelson also earned third place in the 110 hurdles while Lashley finished first in the 1600- meter run and Nichloas Logan earned the third-place ribbon. Lashley was third in the 800-meter run. The 1600-meter relay team of Logan, Lashley, Nelson and Miller finished second.
Earning ribbons for the junior high girls on the day were McKinna Smith, who earned first place in the long jump with a jump of 15’2” and another first in the 100-meter low hurdles. Smith finished third in the 100-meter dash. Destyne Stroud earned a second-place finish in the discus with a throw of 72’9”. Anna Ross earned a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 24’7”. Abi Allison missed out on a ribbon in the shot put due to a coach’s error on the list of competitors. Jaden Brooks finished fourth in the triple jump.
Also participating in the track meet on the varsity side in field events were Collin Cuykendall and Emily Mersereau.
All junior high student athletes were scheduled to return to Lee Academy this week to participate in the District 1-A track meet. Field events were set for Wednesday and the running events for Friday. The girls were to compete against Desoto, Marvell, North Sunflower, Tunica and Deer Creek while the boys were to compete against the same schools, along with Delta Streets.
