The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, along with state and local officials, faith-based organizations, volunteers and private sector partners, continues to respond to the severe weather that struck the state’s Pine Belt May 6-7.
The National Weather Service has confirmed that eight tornadoes touched down in Mississippi on the evening of May 6. This includes an EF-3 tornado that was over a mile wide and was on the ground for 69.8 miles from Wilkinson County to Lawrence County, an EF-2 tornado that touched down in Lamar County, and an additional four EF-1 tornadoes and two EF-0 tornadoes which impacted the state.
MEMA has received reports of damage to 403 homes and 21 businesses statewide. Of the homes affected, 78 were destroyed, while 77 sustained major damage. These figures are subject to change as further evaluations are conducted.
A total of 26 people suffered injuries, including 22 in Lincoln County, three in Lamar County and one in Franklin County.
