St. John plans women’s fellowship
The Daughters of Destiny Women’s Fellowship invites all to their meeting Saturday, Jan. 10, at 10 a.m., in the fellowship hall of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, located at 331 N. Church St. in Charleston.
This month’s focus is artificial intelligence (AI). This will be a short hands-on training led by Minister Lynn Byrd. Come to learn a few basics of using these powerful tools.

Morgana Freeman and Cheryl Swoopes of the SonEdna Foundation will be guest speakers for the Charleston Rotary Club’s noon luncheon meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 14. They will share information about the organization and planned initiatives for 2026.

CHS students of month visit Rotary
The Charleston High School students of the month for December and January will be the guest speakers for the Jan. 21 noon luncheon meeting of the Charleston Rotary Club. Students will discuss their high school accomplishments and future career plans.
Saturday January 24
Calvary Food Pantry to distribute
Calvary Food Pantry, at 36 Ward-Riddick Road, just east of Parchman off Highway 32, will distribute food from 8-9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, for those living in the West Tallahatchie area and in Sunflower County outside the city limits of Drew (which has its own food pantry). Any car in line on time at 9 a.m. will be served, but those arriving late will not be served. Food pantry distribution day is the next-to-last Saturday of each month.
Calvary Food Pantry serves from a drive-thru at its warehouse behind the main building at Calvary Chapel of Parchman. The facility is clearly visible on the north side of the highway, and is marked with a large sign.
Faith Food Pantry to distribute
Faith Food Pantry, located at 30028 Highway 32, Charleston, will distribute food from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24 Food pantry distribution day is usually the next-to-last Saturday of each month.
4-H Livestock Show set Jan. 24
The Tallahatchie County Livestock Show will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Tallahatchie County Fairgrounds near Charleston.
The event, sponsored by the Tallahatchie County 4-H Livestock Club, is free for the public to attend. A concession stand will be available, with proceeds from concessions going to the local 4-H livestock club.
“We would love to have the community come support our youth active in this program as they practice to compete in regional and state competitions with their livestock,” said Shelbie Phelps, Tallahatchie County Agriculture and Natural Resources/4-H Extension agent.
To show an animal, entries are $25 for livestock, $10 for rabbits and a $5 showmanship fee. Late fees kick in Jan. 8. Entries will be accepted on the day of the show.
Peewee showmanship and old-timers showmanship entries are free.

Baptist association sets pageant
The 1st District of Tallahatchie County Baptist Association will present a pageant on Saturday, Feb. 7, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Charleston Elementary School gymnasium.
“Join us for this model casting event and seize the opportunity to make your mark in the world of fashion and entertainment,” noted a flyer for the event, which is open to participation for ages 4-19.
The cost is $10, and attire will be formal.

Arbor Day tree giveaway scheduled
The Tallahatchie County Soil and Water Conservation District will be giving away prepackaged Nuttall Oak saplings and Double Red Althea Shrub saplings on Friday, Feb. 13, for Arbor Day. The tree giveaway will be held in the Charleston USDA/NRCS parking lot starting at 9 a.m. and continuing until 4:30 p.m. or until the supply is exhausted. Mid-State offers youth job help
Out-of-school youth ages 16 to 24, having a high school diploma or equivalent, are being recruited for the Mid-State Opportunity Inc. youth employment program, MySTATUS (Maximize Your Skills to Advance to Unlimited Success).
The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Out-of-School Youth MySTATUS program is funded by The Delta Workforce Development Area through South Delta Planning and Development District.
Youth ages 16-24 in Tallahatchie, Quitman, Tunica and Panola counties are offered a comprehensive training and employment program. Participants are paid $6 hourly for training and $10 hourly for work experience. Cash incentives are awarded to youth who obtain accredited certificates and credentials.

Earn high school diploma in 22 weeks
The Mississippi Youth ChalleNGe Academy, located at Camp Shelby, is the premier alternative education program for 16- to 18-year-old youth who are struggling in school or no longer attending.
With a focus on job training, social skills and self-discipline, ChalleNGe is a nonprofit high school diploma-producing academy designed specifically to meet the needs of high school dropouts and at-risk youth. It is a part of the Mississippi National Guard Youth Challenge Program. Participants may earn their high school diploma in just 22 weeks. Tuition, room and board are absolutely free.
ChalleNGe also offers college classes through a local university. Both male and female applicants are accepted.
