Bingo returns to CARE building
On Friday, Jan. 17, CARE will be hosting a night of fun, food, prizes and bingo at the Charleston Arts Center. There is no charge for this “crazy fun night,” but participants must bring a “white elephant” gift, which must be wrapped or in a bag. There is no need to buy a gift; just bring something you already have. The first game will be at 5:30.

Calvary Food Pantry to distribute
Calvary Food Chapel, at 36 Ward-Riddick Road, just east of Parchman off Highway 32, will distribute food from 7:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, for those living in the West Tallahatchie area and in Sunflower County outside the city limits of Drew (which has its own food pantry). Return empty boxes for refill when you pass through. Be on time.
Faith Food Pantry to distribute
Faith Food Pantry, located at 30028 Highway 32, Charleston, will distribute food from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18. Please return empty boxes for refill when you pass through the drive-thru. Be on time.
Monday January 20
King Day parade set in Charleston
Charleston’s 18th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade will be Monday, Jan. 20. The parade will get underway at noon.
Gwen Dailey will be the grand marshal.
Bands from Charleston and North Panola high schools, and a steppers group from Sardis, are scheduled to perform. The North Panola band will perform following the parade outside New Town Missionary Baptist Church in Charleston.
Entry in the parade is free, and those who take part are asked to display a sign or banner honoring Dr. King. Lineup will be at 11 a.m. on Walnut Street behind City Hall.

Lego Club events set at CARE
CARE continues its after-school program with Lego Club set for Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Lego Club is open to children ages 5 to 10. It is free, but registration is required due to limited seating. A snack will be provided. Call 662-647-0942.

Ladies’ paint night on tap at CAC
The Charleston Arts Center (CARE building) will host a ladies’ paint night class on Friday, Jan. 31 starting at 5:30 p.m. The art session is free with refreshments provided, but donations are appreciated. Enid Lake Habitat Day scheduled
The Enid Lake Habitat Day is set for Saturday, Feb. 1. Volunteers should meet at the new office building at 7 a.m. for breakfast. Work assignments, work areas, safety and activities will be discussed at this time.
Lunch will be served at the Corps shop at noon. Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt for their efforts. There will also be drawings for door prizes donated by local businesses.
DOT helmets are required for drivers and riders of ATVs and UTVs.

NWCC reveals local graduates
Northwest Mississippi Community College has announced that 443 graduates were awarded degrees and certificates for the fall semester during Dec. 13 commencement.
Among those who graduated were Tamya Bland of Tillatoba, and Jakesia Davis, Aironecia Edwards, A’nyjah Nash and Nyla Reed, all of Charleston.
Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch was the commencement speaker.
Charleston grad student involved
My’Keyia Neal, a graduate student in nonprofit management at Delta State University, from Charleston, is one of four inaugural fellows — known as Mississippi Emerging Evaluations fellows — in a University of Mississippi project designed to equip individuals to evaluate the effectiveness of social programs in Mississippi.
They will be working at the University of Mississippi’s Center for Research Evaluation, which is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of projects that, for example, aim to improve mental health, reduce health disparities or increase college retention rates.
Free smoke alarms available
The Enid and Teasdale volunteer fire departments will be installing free smoke alarms to residents in the Enid, Teasdale and Paducah Wells Road areas beginning Feb. 1.
Applications must be filled out in order to get on the installation schedule. No smoke alarms will be given for self-installation.

Hill youth basketball registering
Registration for Robert Hill Youth Foundation youth basketball is underway.
Girls and boys will play in the age groups of 6-8, 9-11 and 12-13 years.
