National Day of Prayer event slated
The community is invited to attend a National Day of Prayer observance at the flagpole of Charleston First Baptist Church at noon on Thursday, May 7. In the event of rain, the commemoration will be held inside the church, and guests are welcome.
The 2026 National Day of Prayer theme is “Glorify God Among the Nations, Seeking Him in All Generations,” based on 1 Chronicles 16:24: “Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.” (New American Standard Bible)

Paul Cemetery meeting, cleanup set
The annual meeting and cleanup at Paul Cemetery will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 9. Donations are needed for the upkeep of the cemetery and will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Gerald Crabb will preach, sing
Gerald Crabb will be the special guest minister for the Sunday, May 10, morning worship service at the Charleston Church of God. The service begins at 10:45 and all are invited.
Crabb is scheduled to preach and sing during the appearance at the Charleston church, located at 659 George Payne Cossar Blvd.
Currently active in full-time ministry, from 2006 through 2025, Crabb has served as an evangelist and has traveled more than 800,000 miles, fulfilling over 2,500 ministry appointments and witnessing over 6,000 souls saved in his services. He founded the gospel music group, The Crabb Family, and is a decorated singer-songwriter who has written more than 500 gospel songs, with 27 of them reaching the No. 1 position nationally.

Sign up for ‘Computer 101’ classes
Computer 101 classes will be offered May 12 and June 9, from 10 a.m. until noon daily. The first session will be an introduction to computers and the second an introduction to Microsoft Word. On Saturday, May 16, New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery, located at 1724 New Hope Road, Scobey, MS 38953, will have their annual memorial service and business meeting followed by a potluck dinner. Mt. Moriah District Usher Federation will meet Sunday, May 17, at the association building near Coffeeville. All ushers of Mt. Moriah and those interested in the profession are invited to come and lend their ideas.

Calvary Food Pantry to distribute
Calvary Food Pantry, at 36 Ward-Riddick Road, just east of Parchman off Highway 32, will distribute food from 8-9 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, for those living in the West Tallahatchie area and in Sunflower County outside the city limits of Drew (which has its own food pantry). Food pantry distribution day is the next-to-last Saturday of each month.

Birdia Keglar Legacy events planned
The Birdia Keglar Legacy Committee announces the 21st annual celebration to take place on Saturday, June 6, in the Charleston area beginning at 10 a.m.
On the lawn of the Tallahatchie County Courthouse in Charleston, the celebration will bring together leaders and community representatives who stand steadfast in keeping alive the efforts of Mrs. Keglar before her untimely death on Jan. 11, 1966.
Featuring a drum call to the community, the opportunity to support longstanding activism and staying the course of action remains the highlighted mission of this yearly event.
During the morning session, an array of entertainment will be featured, including youth dance performances and instrumental and vocal renditions.
An annual cavalcade will proceed from Charleston Court Square to New Town Church, where the afternoon will feature reflections of the commitment of Mrs. Keglar and her group of pioneers who engaged fervently for enhancement of their community.
Participants in this year’s celebration will be reminded of the history of the Birdia Keglar Legacy. A voter education presentation, the awarding of the 2026 BKLegacy scholarship, entertainment, trivia, giveaways and lunch will also be a part of the day’s event.
Everyone is invited to attend and continue to connect and collaborate with recognizing the challenges that our communities face.
Souvenir T-shirts are available for purchase by May 1. Prices are $12 for youth, $25 for adults up to size 2X, and $27 for 3X and larger.

St. John Mother Board induction set
The St. John Missionary Baptist Church family announces the upcoming induction of four members into the Mother Board. All are invited to attend the special service on Sunday, June 7, at 11 a.m., at St. John, 331 N. Church St. in Charleston.
