Tutwiler Quilters offer free classes

The Tutwiler Quilters are offering free quilting lessons for single parents and their child (12-16 years of age) to attend together.

Supplies for the classes will be provided to participants. The classes will be taught via Zoom and in person at the Tutwiler Community Education Center, 304 Hancock St., Tutwiler.  All participants attending the class in person must practice COVID-19 safety measures.

Families who complete the classes will receive a sewing machine and access to a low-interest loan to start their own business.

For more information or to register for the classes, call the TCEC at 662-345-8393.

The lessons are provided by a grant from the Women’s Foundation of Mississippi.

Free food boxes available Tuesdays

The Tutwiler Community Education Center was recently awarded a grant from the Southern Poverty Law Center to provide fresh produce boxes weekly for area residents.

Distribution will be every Tuesday from 10 a.m. until noon, except on Tuesday, Nov. 3.  Only two boxes per car will be allowed.

COVID-19 protective measures are in place and must be followed.

Mid-State offers youth job help

The Mid-State Opportunity Inc. out-of-school youth program name has changed to MySTATUS (Maximize Your Skills to Advance to Unlimited Success).

Youth ages 16-24 are being recruited for the MySTATUS Out-of-School Youth program that began July 1 and lasts until June 30, 2021.

MySTATUS is federally funded by Delta Workforce Development Area through South Delta Planning and Development District to provide out-of-school youth a comprehensive employment program.  It pays youth $4 per hour to train identifying career pathways and equip them with the skills needed to get a job. Subsequently, youth are paid $8 hourly for up to 200 hours to gain work experience.

In addition, cash incentives are awarded to youth who obtain national career readiness certificates, credentials and more throughout the program year. Further, educational and employment-related expenses such as ACT testing fees and certifications, etc., are paid as well. Eligibility must be determined.

For information, call 647-2463 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.

Narconon offers free drug education

Recently, there has been an increase in relapses amongst those in recovery for substance abuse. A large contributing factor has been isolation caused by COVID-19.

The staff at Narconon reminds the public to keep this in mind and pay extra attention to any loved ones who have struggled with substance abuse in the past.

For additional information, visit: https://www.narcononnewliferetreat.org/blog/how-isolation-stunts-recovery.html.

Social Security offers ‘extra help’

Attention, Medicare beneficiaries: Do you have a Medicare prescription drug plan and need help paying for prescription drugs, including premiums, deductibles and co-payments? Do you have low income and limited resources? Are you on Medicaid but still having problems affording drugs or premiums?

Anyone answering “yes” to any of these questions can apply for “extra help” from Social Security. Contact your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) counselor at North Delta Planning and Development District Area Agency on Aging, 1-800-848-3090.

Free civil legal assistance available

North Mississippi Rural Legal Services provides free legal assistance to low-income residents of North Mississippi needing representation on civil legal matters such as bankruptcy, housing, education, taxes, family law, public benefits and domestic violence issues.

Application for services can be made by calling 1-800-498-1804 Monday through Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
