Officials are holding three male "persons of interest" in connection with the Wednesday night shooting death of a man in Webb. No one has been charged.
Tallahatchie County Coroner Ginger Meriwether identified the victim as 22-year-old Moseah McDanail. The deceased sometimes listed his surname as McDaniel — such as on his official Facebook page — but Meriwether said it was spelled as McDanail both by his mother and on his personal ID.
While Meriwether said McDanail's driver's license listed him as a Webb resident of 335 Third St., Webb Acting Police Chief Amos Mitchner said McDanail had been living in Tutwiler.
Meriwether said the cause of death "appears to be" a single gunshot wound and that the body was transported for autopsy, which she said was scheduled to be performed Friday. After autopsy, the body was to be released to Robinson Funeral Home, she added.
The chief said the fatal shooting occurred about 9:05 on North Chickasaw Street. McDanail was pronounced dead at the scene, Meriwether noted.
His body was found "on the grounds of New Beginning Missionary Baptist Church, about 35 yards from the street," Mitchner explained.
He said no weapon has been recovered, but a .40-caliber casing was found at the scene.
Mitchner said the three men who are in custody at the county lockup in Sumner are believed to have been in a car with McDanail on Wednesday night and may have been involved in an altercation with him "earlier in the week" and again "before the shooting."
Mitchner said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is the lead agency in the investigation, but he also credited the Tallahatchie County Sheriff's Office and the police departments of Sumner and Tutwiler for assisting his department.
