Please mark on your calendars that Vacation Bible School at the Tillatoba Baptist Church is July 7-10 from 6-8 p.m. We are also having a preregistration Sunday, June 30, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
And now we are going to brag on sweet Meg Daves a bit! Meg was a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and was inducted in Phi Theta Kappa.
Margaret “Meg” Daves is the daughter of Randy and Pam Daves of Coffeeville. Her maternal grandmother is Joy Mullen of Oakland.
Meg recently received awards and scholarships, both scholastic and athletic. On Awards Day, Meg Daves received awards of Kirk Scholar, and highest average in Dual Enrollment American Literature II, Economics and Biology II. She was also named salutatorian of the 2024 graduating class of Kirk Academy.
She received scholarships from Northwest Community College for tennis, The Drew Young Memorial/Hinds Chapel Church Endowed Scholarship, and the Salutatorian Scholarship.
Meg was awarded the Most Valuable Player award for the Kirk Academy tennis team and was awarded postseason Most Valuable Player. Meg also won the singles tennis championship for the state of Mississippi. She was featured in a public service commercial with the governor of our state celebrating National Tennis Month. We look forward to following Meg’s future tennis matches as she plays for the NWCC Rangers. Follow your dreams, Meg.
Our surprise visitor Saturday morning was son Derek Deck from Cleveland. Grandson Waylon Dukes came down also and visited.
Martha Box says, ”Girl you know it ain't easy being me. Thank Heavens Jesus still loves us. All my moaning and groaning would be worse without Him!”
Martha said she has been enjoying mornings and coffee on the porch, but Monday morning it was hot very early. Even the birds were drooping about,” she said.
Martha has been trying to save her tomatoes from worms and crows. Her brother Jesse got some metal pans hung to scare off the birds. Martha said she plucked and crushed those well-fed giant worms. One was so big, she said “He made, I dare you, eye contact with me as I crushed it!”
Martha’s daughter Ginger is doing great. That so wonderful husband of hers, Phil, is taking such good care of her. He made biscuits Sunday morning!
Martha said she has been having to work on her plumbing for two days now. “Rissa, my little Wonder Woman, tried to fix it. Calling plumber in a.m., Martha noted. ” It seems there is always something to fix, doesn’t it, Martha?
Saturday, Tommy and Debbie McCool went and picked up Tommy’s sister, Alice Kellum, and then went to Leland, picked up another sister, Patsy and her husband Jim, and then they went to Philadelphia, Miss., to visit their brother, James. That is too long of a ride for one day. They stayed until about 11 p.m. and then came back to Leland, dropped all of them off, and got home around 3:30 a.m. Debbie said they spent Sunday around the house, and she cooked granddaughter Hannah Beavers some pork chops and rice and made dressing for granddaughter Caitlyn and son-in-law Jason. “Great weekend but wore out. Glad I'm off today. Our air conditioning is broken at work so get an extra day off until fixed,” said Debbie. She said Sandy and Skylar Beavers came over and swam a while Sunday afternoon. Sounds like a fun-filled weekend, Debbie!
My up the road neighbor, Lila Myrick, says it’s too hot to get out and do anything, but she did get up early and go to Batesville for bloodwork Monday morning. I hope everything comes out good for you, Lila!
Our little great-granddaughter, Haven Rose Dukes, and her cousin, Joanna Pullen, are playing T-ball at Rosebloom this year. They look so sweet walking around holding hands. Waylon said Haven Rose ate three hot dogs while playing on the field.
On the other hand, this past Saturday, my great-grandson, Bradley Holliday of Grenada, and his traveling ball team, the Sluggers, played in Water Valley in the “Battle in the Valley” tournament. The Sluggers went undefeated in the tournament and ended their spring season with a tournament win as well as a championship ring. I hate I didn’t get to see either one of my great-grands play ball this year because of sickness but maybe I’ll make up for it next season.
My cousin Phillip Tillman called from South Carolina to brag on his two new great-grands. Noah Tillman was born Father’s Day and little girl, Nayeli Myles, was born the next day. How wonderful is that? Phillip’s grands, Jordan and Megan, are the proud parents.
Our only visitor Sunday was daughter Donna, who drove up from Grenada and brought us a case of Ensure. Those are good!
JR Dukes has been doing a lot of fishing at Enid Lake lately and having some good luck fishing there. The crappie are catching that hook! He says they are feeding pretty good.
Beth Deloach says thanks to all the sweet hostesses that made their shower day perfect Saturday. Kristie Hartley Swope couldn’t have done a more beautiful job with the decorations! I think Kristie is working pretty steady with her decorating jobs. A lot of useful gifts were received for baby John Beldon.
Recipe for the week: Sweet Dill Pickle Sticks
Wash one 32-ounce jar of whole dill pickles, slice and wash again. Dry with paper towels.
Mix together: 2 cups sugar, 1 cup vinegar, 1 teaspoon celery seed and 1 teaspoon mustard seed.
Pack pickles in your jar and bring sugar mixture to a boil. Pour syrup over pickles and seal jar. Cool. Refrigerate for several days before using.
Thought for the day: Doing nothing is very hard to do. You never know when you’re finished.
