Christian love and sympathy to the Gerald Wiggins family of Oakland. Gerald passed away Aug. 16 after a long battle with kidney cancer. He leaves one daughter, Larissa, and three grandchildren.
Faye and Kristie Hartley took a short vacation to Pensacola, Florida, this past weekend and they had a great time.
James Lee Sturdivant had a blast at his birthday party Saturday! His mom, Melissa Sturdivant, said she was so thankful for all the help from Morgan Casiday, Margaret Hopper Casiday, and Mason Casiday. They thank everyone who came. James Lee is thankful for all his friends and family who came to help him celebrate his 9th birthday.
Martha Box said if time was not flying by so fast, she thinks we would burn up. “Hotter than Dixie, too hot for this ole gal!” she said. She did go out shopping with her sister Joyce Saturday. She reported that they had so many “silly wrong things” go on. They ate, shopped at one store and came home.
Martha’s son-in-law, Phil, and son, Ben, came by and did a bit of work for her. Granddaughters Rissa and Lilly stopped by to give her some “much needed hugs.” That evening, Martha went to Grenada and the first place she was going to stop was closed due to air-conditioning failure. She started to turn into Walmart, and cops came flying out and right at the exit she saw more cops and a man in handcuffs. “Too much excitement for me so I just came home!” she said.
Martha described a “wonderful visit” at Willow Springs Assembly of God. She walked in just a few minutes late and Bro. Tommy called out her name and told her not to forget the 26th. (After church, she was told there will be a good gathering and eating that day. “And here I am on a low-calorie, low-carb diet,” she said.)
Martha added that there was a great encouraging message of Godly experiences and wonderful singing that made Sunday so great that she rested the remainder of the day. She had her feet up when Ginger, Phil, Jake and Josh came in.
Your writer’s daughter, Donna, drove me to Oxford Wednesday for two different doctors’ appointments. Between appointments, we ate lunch and did a little shopping. An enjoyable time even with the doctors’ appointments. After returning home and a short nap, I started crocheting and stopped at midnight and went to bed. Since I can’t drive my car anymore — being on oxygen full-time — I’m pretty well confined at home, so I’ve been crocheting a lot and it relaxes me.
Happy birthday to Scotty Chambers on the 22nd; to Benny Walker, Lily Whitaker, Phillip Bell and Geneva Kelly on the 23rd; to Annette Corley, Pat Brooks and Heath Crawford on the 24th; and to Haven Rose Dukes, my great-granddaughter, who will celebrate her fifth birthday on the 26th. May you all have a wonderful time celebrating your special day.
Diane Dukes reported that Cossar State Park had a good turnout for the motorcycle show. The Bondage Breakaz Motorcycle Club joined them, and The Street Cuisine food truck and Buckley’s Shaved Ice were there. Luther Folson brought the bouncy houses and Tillatoba’s own Darbys Own Wood ’N Stone was there. They had a live DJ, Mix-A-Tac, and DJ Dream Maker brought the music. Diane Dukes visited Annie Turner and Josh Saturday and took them a caramel cake.
Cossar State Park has bingo on every third Wednesday of the month. Ping Pong Paris calls the numbers.
Lauri McCullar’s nephew and his family came to visit her over the weekend. They had the best time and enjoyed the motorcycle show and the good food, reporting that Street Cuisine has the best smash burger ever.
Recipe for the week: Crock-Pot Steak and Gravy
Ingredients:
2, 2.5 lb. steak tips or stew meat
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 packet Lipton onion soup mix
1 cup beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
4 tbsp butter cut into pats
1 tbsp tomato paste
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp black pepper
8 cloves of chopped garlic
Add the beef broth and Lipton onion soup mix to the Crock-Pot and stir. In a bowl, combine the steak tips, olive oil, pepper, Worcestershire, tomato paste and chopped garlic and mix well.
Add the meat mixture to the Crock-Pot and shake the brown gravy mix over the top but do not mix. Then add pats of butter on top of the brown gravy mix.
Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 4-5 hours. You can thicken the sauce with a little corn starch and water for the last 30 minutes of cooking. Best served over mashed potatoes, rice or biscuits! Enjoy!
Thought for the day: The most important thing is to enjoy your life, to be happy. It’s all that matters.
