A freeze warning is in effect from 11 p.m. tonight (Monday, March 18) until 9 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, March 19) in Tallahatchie County and in 70 other counties in Mississippi, as well as portions of east Arkansas, west Tennessee and northeastern Louisiana.
Subfreezing temperatures as low as 26 are expected in some parts of the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS)
The NWS Memphis office said the freeze warning impacts the following counties in its coverage area of Mississippi: Alcorn, Benton, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Coahoma, DeSoto, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Marshall, Monroe, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union and Yalobusha.
The NWS Jackson office said the freeze warning covers the following counties in its coverage area of Mississippi: Adams, Attala, Bolivar, Carroll, Choctaw, Clarke, Claiborne, Clay, Copiah, Covington, Forrest, Franklin, Grenada, Hinds, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Jasper, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Jones, Kemper, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Leake, Leflore, Lincoln, Lowndes, Madison, Marion, Montgomery, Neshoba, Newton, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Rankin, Scott, Sharkey, Simpson, Smith, Sunflower, Warren, Washington, Webster, Winston and Yazoo.
Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.
Tuesday is the first day of spring, and the high temperature is expected to climb to about 58 in Tallahatchie County, with a nighttime low of about 40 Tuesday night.
