A Freeze Warning has been issued for Tallahatchie County and much of the Mid-South from midnight tonight until 9 a.m. Wednesday.
A warning had been issued for Monday night and a watch for Tuesday night, but the National Weather Service has updated its forecast and has now issued a warning.
NWS notes that subfreezing temperatures as low as 25 are expected tonight in some areas of north Mississippi, west Tennessee, east Arkansas and southeast Missouri.
Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
NWS advises:
» Take steps to protect tender plants from the cold.
» To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, they should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly.
» Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
The weather forecast predicts a high of 59 Wednesday before warming up to 69 on Thursday with a chance of rain, with another drop to freezing or subfreezing temps Friday night through Sunday night leading up to the first day of spring on Monday, March 20.
