The Mississippi Department of Transportation has announced the temporary closure of I-55 northbound in Grenada due to a hazardous materials spill.
All northbound lanes of I-55 at Mississippi 8 (Exit 206) are blocked until further notice today (Friday, March 22).
Traffic is being diverted from the interstate onto Mississippi 8, then to U.S. 51 and Paper Mill Road just north of Grenada.
MDOT noted that an 18-wheeler crashed into the median, spilling hazardous material onto the roadway. The incident reportedly happened about 4 a.m.
A hazmat team is on scene assisting with the cleanup of the hazardous materials, the state agency reported.
It was originally hoped that the site could be cleared and the lanes reopened by 2 p.m., but in a 2 o'clock update MDOT modified its assessment by saying the temporary closure on I-55 would be "until further notice."
The Grenada Star made a Facebook post about the accident.
