Three candidates are vying for an East Tallahatchie School District board position that is up for grabs in November’s general election.
Sept. 9 was the deadline for prospective candidates to file qualifying papers.
Last to join the race in Education District 7 was James Lewis “Honey” Johnson, 69, of 130 Eskridge St., Charleston, who filed Sept. 7.
He will be on the Nov. ballot with former Charleston city board member Tawanda Smith Shannon, 48, of 189 Mulberry St., Charleston, and Santrail Hunt-Kuykendall, 36, of 148 Lafayette St., Charleston, who qualified earlier.
The ED 7 incumbent, Tameka McIntyre, 38, did not file for reelection. She had served one five-year term after defeating longtime incumbent Danny Adams in 2017.
Members of the East and West Tallahatchie school districts’ five-member boards of trustees serve staggered five-year terms, with one seat in each district coming up for election every fall.
In the other school board seat in play this year, incumbent Marvin F. George, 56, of 622 N. Chickasaw St., Webb, did not draw any opposition in his reelection bid in Education District 2.
George is completing his first full five-year term on the West Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees, where he serves as president.
He had initially been voted into office in a November 2015 special election, when he was unopposed in seeking to fill the seat last held by his late father, Charles M. George, at the time of his March 3, 2015, death.
