TUTWILER — The Tutwiler Community Education Center (TCEC) quilters will have hundreds of hand- quilted items for sale Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Oxford.
Elizabeth Payne, professor of history at The University of Mississippi, her husband Ken Rutherford, professor Peter Frost and wife Marnie are the founders and organizers of Quilts at Oxford.
TCEC quilters have been going to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Oxford for over 10 years.
Quilted items will be displayed in the social hall. Items include bed quilts in twin, full, queen and king sizes, placemats in singles as well as sets, table runner, hot pads, bags and, new this year, hot mitts, cell phone and tablet holders.
Christmas items will be included in this sale.
“This is a large sale for our quilters,” noted Carla Ross, executive director of TCEC, “and we look forward to seeing our friends from the Oxford area at this show.”
The event is jointly sponsored by St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Second Baptist Racial Reconciliation Committee, the Sarah Isom Women’s Center and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture
The Tutwiler Quilters are a group of African-American women associated with the TCEC in Tutwiler.
They machine piece and then hand quilt in their homes. The products are sold through the TCEC. The women receive 80 percent of the price of the product.
This quilting project helps preserve the African-American quilting tradition of the Mississippi Delta and also enables the women to earn money to support themselves and their families.
