TUTWILER — The Tutwiler Community Education Center (TCEC) quilters will have hundreds of hand-quilted items for sale Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28, during the Seventh Annual Oxford Fiber Arts Festival.
They will join other vendors in a show and sale at The Powerhouse, 413 S. 14th St., in Oxford, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. both days.
The Tutwiler Quilters, a group of African-American women associated with the TCEC in Tutwiler for 28 years, will have a variety of quilted items for sale in Oxford this week.
The offerings will include bed quilts in twin, full, queen and king sizes and placemats in singles as well as sets.
The Tutwiler Quilters also will feature table runners, hot pads, bags and, new this year, oven mitts, cellphone and table holders and lanyards.
Members of the group machine piece and then hand quilt items in their homes. The products are sold at the Tutwiler center year-round and at art shows throughout the year.
Hot pads and bags are for sale at the Delta Blues Museum and at the Shack Up Inn, both in Clarksdale.
Quilted items are purchased from the quilters as soon as completed, then sales are handled by TCEC staff.
This quilting project helps preserve the African-American quilting tradition of the Mississippi Delta and also enables the women to earn money to support themselves and their families.
