WEBB — Family and friends of local resident Lue Ethel “Nen” Simmons filled the Webb Community House Saturday afternoon for the celebration of a very special birthday which would come, officially, two days later: her historic centennial.
Three large cakes, each adorned with white icing, edible red roses and other fine embellishments, were set side by side to spell out the occasion in numbers: “100.”
Webb Mayor Tracy Mims presented Simmons with a commemorative plaque from the mayor’s office, and there was a formal program featuring numerous speakers, the reciting of poetry, a slide show, and songs and music by several performers.
According to a printed biographical sketch, Simmons was born April 24, 1917, in Charleston to the late Arthur and Hattie Little Miller.
She was educated in a church that was considered a part of the Tallahatchie County school system.
“Many days she walked over 10 miles one way to the church to get her learning, as she so proudly would say,” the program noted. “She received an eighth-grade education, which was the highest level one could receive at the church.”
She married Jerry Simmons, and together they raised a son, L.H. Simmons, and three daughters, Jerlean, Beulah and Ora. They also helped to raise several of their grandchildren.
One notable fact from her life, according to the sketch, is that Simmons’ mother-in-law, Rosie Raybourn, lived with her for over 60 years.
In earlier years, Simmons worked as a farmer and as a cook and maid, and she has been a member of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church for many years.
In a Facebook post the following day, Simmons’ daughter, Beulah Washington of Webb, expressed appreciation for Saturday’s tribute.
“Thank you family and friends that came far and near to help celebrate my mother’s 100th birthday...” she wrote. “Thank you for your gifts and kind words. A great big thanks to our mayor, Dr. Tracy Mims for the beautiful plaque. Your kindness will not be forgotten.”
