WEBB — First-term incumbent Ward 1 Alderwoman Marilyn Gibbs was beaten in Tuesday’s Democratic primary runoff here.
Hilary Benson, 38, topped Gibbs, 37, by a final count of 20-8, according to Webb Town Clerk Quartesha Kindle. Benson led 20-6 at the close of election night, but two affidavit ballots counted the next day went in Gibbs' favor.
In the May 2 primary, Benson had led a three-person field, receiving exactly 50 percent of the vote, but fell shy of the legally required 50 percent plus one vote to win outright.
The Webb contest was the only runoff election in Tallahatchie County on May 16.
