BELZONI — The West Tallahatchie junior high Choctaws are the Delta Valley Conference football champions after defeating the Humphreys County junior high Cowboys 6-0 in triple overtime here Thursday night.
“It was a slugfest. We were pretty evenly matched,” said West Tally coach Gerald Johnson. “We had several touchdowns called back due to penalties in the game.”
Marco Greer scored the winning touchdown on a 4-yard run in the third overtime of the game, played at Humphreys County High School.
Johnson credited his team for being resilient during the 2016 campaign. After a 16-0 season-opening loss to Amanda Elzy, the Choctaws went on a seven-game win streak that included last week’s title game.
“We started off kind of shaky,” said Johnson, “but the young men stepped up and pulled together after that first loss. They persevered.”
The 7-1 record was sweet, but the conference championship was the icing on the cake.
It was the first DVC title captured by the junior high Choctaws since 2009, Johnson noted.
