WEBB — Milton McGee Jr., point guard and wingman for the West Tallahatchie High School boys’ basketball team, will appear in the same state all-star game as his head coach, Bernard Berryhill.
McGee, a junior, is one of 12 players selected from among all public school classifications to represent the North Mississippi boys’ team at the 2017 Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center North/South All-Star Basketball Games.
So far this season, McGee (6-1, 160) has averaged 15.5 points, five rebounds, three steals, 2.5 assists and one block for the Choctaws, defending Class 2A state champions.
Berryhill is one of two coaches — the other is Michael Seger of East Webster — chosen to guide the boys’ North All-Stars.
During the 2015-16 season, Berryhill, a West Tally alumnus, coached the Choctaws to the program’s most successful campaign ever and earned the first basketball state championship of any team, public or private, in Tallahatchie County history. The Choctaws finished the season with a perfect 34-0 record, becoming the first Mississippi boys’ basketball team in 31 years to run the table.
Despite a relatively young roster, entering this week, the Choctaws boasted a 2016-17 record of 21-4 and were the third-ranked team in Class 2A, according to The Clarion-Ledger’s latest statewide poll.
The all-star basketball games will be played on Friday, March 24, at A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College in Clinton. The girls’ tilt tips off at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ contest at 7:30. Admission is $10.
