The Mississippi Attorney General says the state has now secured more than $400 million in opioid settlement funds.
After a decade of efforts by attorneys general across the nation, the $7.4 billion opioid settlement with Purdue Pharma was deemed legally effective earlier this month.
Of that total, Mississippi is anticipated to receive about $40.9 million. Combined with previous settlements, the state has now secured more than $400 million in opioid settlement funds, according to the office of Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch (R).

Southern Miss won their sixth consecutive game to move into second place in the Sun Belt Conference baseball race. The Golden Eagles (37-14, 19-8) swept all three games against James Madison last weekend to move within one game of conference leader Coastal Carolina (20-7, 34-17). Beginning Thursday of this week, USM will host Georgia Southern (7-20, 15-37) while Coastal Carolina will travel to Louisiana-Lafayette (14-13, 32-20). This weekend's games will conclude regular season play. The Sun Belt Conference tournament will be held in Montgomery, AL Tuesday, May 19-24.

Kosciusko will play at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Mooreville in the decisive game of 4A North State baseball.
Kosciusko forced Game 3 with a 17-4 win Saturday. The Whippets broke a 2-2 tie with seven runs in the second, added one in the third and had another seven-run rally in the fourth. The game ended under the 10-run mercy rule after Mooreville batted in the top of the fifth.
Mooreville won Friday’s first game 8-2.
Kosciusko is 3-0 while facing elimination. In the third round the Whippets rebounded from a 5-3 loss to North Pontotoc with 3-0 ad 11-6 wins.

Mississippi Valley State’s football team has been banned from postseason play for the second consecutive year, according to the NCAA’s 2024-2025 Academic Progress Rate report released this week.
The program was assessed a Level 2 penalty, which includes in season and out of season restrictions.
APR, which was implemented in 2003, is a metric used by the NCAA to track the academic success and the eligibility of student-athletes over time. Teams must have an APR score of at least 930 to stay penalty free.

Earlene Johnson McBride, affectionately known as “Nanaw” to many of those who loved her, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on April 8, 2026, at the age of 78. Waiting to welcome her at Heaven’s gates was her beloved husband, Gary Leigh McBride, who preceded her in death.
