Gary Wayne O’Brien, age 68, of Ethel, passed away on June 4, 2026, at UMMC in Jackson.
Funeral services are 11:00 am Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Culpepper Funeral Home Chapel in Kosciusko. Visitation will be on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Culpepper Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at Tabernacle Cemetery in Ethel. Kelly Mitchell will officiate.

MSU, partners receive East Mississippi Sentinel Landscape Designation
STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State University, along with several state and military partners, are announcing that the East Mississippi Sentinel Landscape (EMSL) has officially been selected for designation by the federal Sentinel Landscapes Partnership, recognizing the region’s national importance to military readiness, working lands conservation, and long-term landscape resilience.

June is National Iced Tea Month. In the South, every month is Sweet Tea Month. Sweet tea is also known as the “white wine of the south”. We serve it with every meal, no matter what the season. Our babies have it in their bottles and sip-pee cups.

Dolos "Val" King passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, Val grew up on a farm with her beloved parents and four brothers. Over the years, many memorable family gatherings took place at the farm, with delicious home-cooked meals, walks in the woods, and storytelling and laughter on the front porch.

This Wednesday, June 10, is the deadline for Mississippi residents affected by Winter Storm Fern (DR-4899) to apply for financial assistance. The storm impacted the state from Jan. 23–27, 2026.
As of June 9, more than 84,000 Mississippians have registered for assistance. Through FEMA's Individual Assistance program, more than $126 million has been distributed to eligible storm survivors.
The counties with the highest number of registrations are:
• Panola County – 5,577
• Washington County – 5,373
