Wednesday, April 1, is the deadline to file an application for homestead exemption, according to Tallahatchie County Tax Assessor-Collector Dorothy Martin.
Homestead exemption, a tax provision that must be applied for, reduces property taxes on a person’s primary residence.
In Tallahatchie County, it is available to full-time residents who have a Tallahatchie County license plate, pay Mississippi income tax, have their deed acknowledged by Dec. 31, 2025, live on the property as of Jan. 1, 2026, and have their deed recorded by Jan. 7, 2026.
A county resident who has claimed homestead exemption in the past does not need to sign a new form this year unless they have experienced one of the following changes in their life or living circumstances:
» They or their spouse became 65 years of age
» They or their spouse became disabled
» They built a new house or bought a different home
» They bought or sold land that may possibly be added to or taken from the homestead
» They married or divorced, or their spouse has died
Filing is accomplished at tax assessor’s offices in Charleston and Sumner. The Charleston office is located in the Tallahatchie County Courthouse, while the Sumner office of the tax assessor is located on the square, east of the courthouse there.
