Tuesday's Democratic Party primary in the city of Charleston drew just shy of 35% of all registered voters to the polls.
Overall, 559 of the city's 1,599 registered voters — a voter registration total based on a March 26 printout — chose to exercise their right to be heard at the ballot box, or 34.96%.
In the race for mayor, where incumbent Sedrick Smith Sr. was unopposed on the Democratic ballot, 498 voters, or 31.14% of those eligible, cast a ballot.
In Ward 1, 85 of 245 registered voters cast a ballot in the alderman race, or 34.69%. Incumbent Gyrone Kenniel won reelection over two challengers.
In Ward 2, where incumbent alderman Lloyd C. Smith did not have an opponent, 28 of 359 eligible voters took part, or 7.8%.
In Ward 3, where Tawanda Smith-Shannon defeated incumbent Alderwoman Brenda Walton-Willis, 119 of 327 registered voters cast ballots in the race, or 36.39%.
In Ward 4, which saw the most activity, 200 of 350 registered voters participated for a turnout of 57.14%. Political newcomer Michael Webster defeated incumbent Alderwoman Sandy F. Smith and Gina M. Holley.
In Ward 5, 116 of 318 eligible voters made the effort to cast a ballot, or 36.48%. Newcomer Cassandra Harris-Patterson defeated four-term incumbent Alderman Perry Herron.
