The Birdia Keglar Committee has announced the 20th yearly celebration tribute to their icon of freedom, justice and equality.
The date for this milestone event is Saturday, June 7, in the Charleston area.
The theme for the day is “Honoring the Past. Shaping the Future.”
This event is held each year to pay tribute to Mrs. Birdia Keglar, whose life was taken violently as she fought vigorously and with determination for fairness, peace, impartiality and a genuine respect for all.
The Birdia Keglar Legacy Committee and other participants will share memories and provide projections of future endeavors. Focused activities are planned for all.
A “Drum Call to the Community” will spearhead the day and will commence at 10 a.m. on the Charleston Courthouse lawn. Following will be a cavalcade to the former National Guard armory off George Cossar Boulevard.
At this facility, there will be games and other age-appropriate activities for youth on the grounds to include concessions, an art contest, a dance contest, scavenger hunt and face painting.
Greetings and remarks from area leaders will be at the forefront of the afternoon scheduled program. Voter education and registration tables will be available.
Health/wellness screenings and information will be provided by medical professionals and community resource presenters.
The 2025 Birdia Keglar Scholarship will be awarded to a young woman from Tallahatchie County who has met the criteria set forth in the organization’s application process.
The day will not be complete without the presentation of the BK Legacy Community Service Award to a deserving individual.
A guest speaker will share valued words of concern to the audience. Other enjoyable entertainment is scheduled. Lunch will be served. Door prizes will be given.
“We hope that all in the community will help us continue this legacy as our future depends on it,” said a spokesperson. “Please join us! Your participation in this legacy celebration reflects your support and effort.”
