The month of February has been busy and challenging, to say the least.
February, however, being recognized as Black Heritage Month, has been filled with various programs, specials, salutes and many events paying tribute to its history.
Celebrating shows recognition and honor of significant contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history. African American communities have struggled for freedom and equal opportunities. Many, themselves, don’t understand so we must continue to educate the oncoming generations.
In recognition of Black Heritage, our community salutes Mrs. Eva M. Covington, who is a longtime resident of the Little Hubbard community and a dedicated member of Little Hubbard Missionary Baptist Church.
Eva is a living legend who gives of her time, resources and gifts to help others. She spent 34½ years with the Head Start program services. The Head Start center in Charleston was renamed the Eva Covington Head Start Center in her honor. She has also received the CARE Living Legend award, presented to her along with retired educator Mrs. Elizabeth Keglar and celebrity Morgan Freeman, and is honored to have the Eva Covington Endowment Scholarship to Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia given in her honor.
Mrs. Covington, for more than 25 years, is a charter member of the American Cancer Society’s local chapter, “Rally for a Cure.” She continues to give of her time and talents supporting this organization which is dedicated to lifesaving research, treatment and care and locally assists cancer patients in Tallahatchie county.
Beyond the Gates is a new hour-long daytime soap opera with an all black cast. It premiered Monday, Feb. 24, on CBS at 1 p.m. The week before, the scheduled time presented and introduced members of the cast, some you may be familiar with who played roles or appeared in other entertainment. This new show was announced in late fall of ’24. It will be interesting to see.
