Happy June! Warm and pleasant greetings to all.
The month of June reminds us of Juneteenth Day celebration. Juneteenth is one holiday that is not only just about history, but about what comes next. It is a federal holiday (June 19) celebrated to commemorate the ending of slavery. As the appropriateness for the same time, it sets the stage for a local event this Saturday.
The 20th celebration of the Birdia Keglar Legacy will be Saturday, June 7. The celebration theme is: “Honor the Past, Shaping the Future.” This annual affair will be at the former National Guard armory in Charles-ton, with activities throughout the day.
The entire community is asked to please join in as the celebration of Birdia Keglar Legacy continues. The legacy committee cordially welcomes your presence and support.
June, as other months, lists many observances that you may want to celebrate. Men’s Health and National Safety Month are two subjects to mention. Men’s Health Month is recognized in June and again in November. Each time focuses on general health, encouraging healthy lifestyles and early detection of health problems. We encourage all men to prioritize their wellbeing.
Actually, it’s not just a man’s issue because it impacts wives, mothers, daughters and sisters. It’s a family issue. So women, we need to talk with our husbands, sons, brothers and friends and encourage them to take charge and concern for their health. We (women) are expected and most always take care of them. Yet they like being macho and invincible!
The Retired Teachers Association (RTA) was pleased to award scholarships in May at both high schools in the county to eligible graduating seniors. Scholarships were awarded to first and second places, respectively, to Alysun McIntyre and Tykeria Davis, both of Charleston High School, and to Kennedy Williams and Lorenzo Bailey, both of West Tallahatchie High School. The community congratulates these students.
Also in May, RTA always pays tribute to National Teachers Appreciation Week/Day. Each school in the East Tallahatchie School District and district office were delivered a variety of chicken wing platters to enjoy.
RTA President Sevelda Taylor says these are just two ongoing projects the organization looks forward to accomplishing at the end of the school year. She hopes parents and others will encourage students to make applications for scholarships.
Taking interest in students’ education is a vital concern for all people, as it impacts our communities and helps make them more well-rounded for a better way of life for all.
Enjoy life today.
