Warm and pleasant greetings.
It’s the first full week of summer and the last week of June. We are already feeling the heat of soaring temperatures. It’s halfway through another year, and it’s the hottest time.
Everyone should be vigilant during the hot weather, as it can be dangerous enough for illness or even death.
Being older ourselves, we are always concerned about health issues, especially this time of year. Many older people are taking more medications and some can interfere with overall health. Some meds can be sensitive to skin and the body’s inability to cool itself down.
Researching information for one drug, I found five drugs listed for “at risk” for sunburn symptoms. These were antibiotics, anti-fungals, antihistamines, statins (cholesterol meds) and diabetes medications.
The article also listed eight commonly used medications that can make it hard for the body to handle heat. These were medicines pertaining to the heart and antidepressants (to treat anxiety), antipsychotic (mental health), central nerve system stimulant (ADHD), anti- choleric (overactive bladder), antihistamine (allergies), decongestants (cold and allergies) and dopamine (Parkinson’s disease). Take time to re-read your medication labels and other information attached to prescription drugs, as it’s important to know this information. Taylor has been taking insulin for over 58 years and eye drops for the last 40 years, and last week the pharmacist reminded him not to take the eye drops and insulin within the same hour or two! Never heard this before. It took several days to comprehend, but what could he do except just start now!
Remember, the heat is on! Don’t sweat it. Take care of yourself. You don’t need to be the “heat hero!”
Learn what to do if you are in a situation and need help. Remember, the elderly, disabled and obese people, infants and those with serious health conditions are at special risk for heat-related (health) emergencies.
Try to keep cool and beat the heat!
