The body of a missing Bolivar County man was discovered Monday afternoon in a farm field near Philipp.
No foul play is suspected.
Tallahatchie County Sheriff Jimmy Fly said Amos Lee Hughes, 72, of Renova, was found outside his vehicle, a 2013 Ford Taurus, in a field about one mile east of Philipp.
Fly said the car and body were in a turn row approximately three-quarters of a mile off Highway 8.
“The vehicle had gotten bogged down in the mud,” the sheriff explained. “It looked like the man had taken his jacket off and used it to try to gain some traction.”
A farmer reported the discovery of the vehicle and body to local officials at 4:49 p.m., the sheriff noted.
“There were no signs of foul play,” said Fly, who noted that Hughes “had his wallet on him, and his car keys were still in the ignition.”
Tallahatchie County Coroner Anthony Hawkins agreed Tuesday that there was “nothing suspicious” about the death, adding that no autopsy would be ordered.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation had issued a statewide Silver Alert for Hughes shortly before 2 p.m. Monday after being notified that he had been missing since Saturday. He was last seen driving north in Cleveland, wearing a blue cap, black leather jacket, navy blue shirt and khaki pants.
Family members of Hughes said he suffered from a medical condition that could have impaired his judgment.
