The last of two incumbent Tallahatchie County school board members whose positions will appear on general election ballots this fall has qualified to seek reelection, according to documents on file at the circuit clerk’s office in Charleston.
Lucinda Berryhill, 71, of 144 Martha St., Tutwiler, who submitted her Qualifying Statement of Intent Tuesday to seek another five-year term in Education District 1, which represents a seat on the West Tallahatchie School District Board of Trustees.
Incumbent ED 6 member Audra Denise “Temp” Brown, 57, had filed required paperwork last Monday to have another go at her role on the East Tallahatchie school board, where she presently serves as board secretary.
The qualifying window for school board opened July 21, and the qualifying deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20. The election will be Nov. 3.
Members of the East and West Tallahatchie school districts’ five-member boards of trustees serve staggered five-year terms, with one seat in each district coming up for election every fall.
According to Mississippi State University Extension, school boards have authority to regulate school district affairs, property and finances that are not subject to state law. They are responsible for curriculum, personnel, buildings, district policies and other duties.
There is no qualifying fee for school board, but candidates must file a Qualifying Statement of Intent and submit a petition with the signatures of 50 registered voters who are residents of their respective education district.
