Unemployment in Tallahatchie County remained constant at 3.0% from July to August, according to the latest estimates from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
In August, 150 Tallahatchians were unemployed, and 4,930 employed, from a local civilian labor force totaling 5,080. The labor force consists of everyone who has a job or is actively looking.
In July, 150 local residents had been jobless, while 4,960 were working, among a labor force of 5,110, according to MDES.
Tallahatchie County’s August unemployment rate was three-tenths of 1% lower than the 3.5% jobless rate of August 2023, when 170 local residents were unemployed, and 4,580 employed, among a labor force tallying 4,750.
The national rate of unemployment during August was 4.4%, down one-tenth of a percent from July’s 4.5%, but five-tenths of 1 percent higher than the 3.9% rate of August 2023.
Mississippi’s jobless rate stood at 3.2% in August, a drop of one-tenth of 1% from July’s 3.3% and four-tenths of 1 percent less than the 3.6% rate one year ago.

At 11.9%, Jefferson County had the highest unemployment rate in the state. Both Rankin and Union counties posted the lowest rate, 2.3%.
Among 20 Mississippi municipalities whose unemployment data is tracked by MDES, the city of Brandon had the lowest jobless rate of 2.1% in August. At 4.9%, Greenville’s was highest.
