On Thu, 10/22/2020 - 10:48 AM

OXFORD — Given the heated rhetoric of this year’s campaign, the age and temperament of the candidates, along with a worldwide pandemic, this may be the most unusual presidential election in my lifetime.

Remembering Whitey and Mickey
By Charles Dunagin, READ MORE > 13,769 Reads
On Thu, 10/15/2020 - 08:26 AM

OXFORD — I don’t follow major league baseball like I once did, back in the days when Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin were playing for the New York Yankees.

Fearmongering exists on both sides
By Charles Dunagin, READ MORE > 25,554 Reads
On Thu, 09/03/2020 - 10:22 AM

OXFORD — My father used to tell the story about a man knocking down another guy who had cursed him — calling him a name that questioned his parentage.

When the aggressor was admonished by a bystander that he had previously called the victim of the assault the same thing, he replied, “Well, that’s different.”

Recollecting some moonshine tales
By Charles Dunagin, READ MORE > 9,839 Reads
On Wed, 07/22/2020 - 06:48 PM

OXFORD — I started hearing about Kiln moonshine whiskey by the time I was old enough to know what moonshine was.

My grandfather had worked in the sawmill industry in that part of Hancock County during the South Mississippi timber boom of the early 1900s.

Homeschooling not for the majority

On Thu, 04/23/2020 - 09:54 AM

OXFORD — It’s hard to find slivers of  silver linings behind the COVID-19 cloud because, to be honest, they are few and far between.

Similarities to my teen years striking
By Charles Dunagin, READ MORE > 19,663 Reads
On Thu, 04/02/2020 - 09:22 AM

OXFORD — It’s almost like being in a time warp from my teenage years when drive-in movies were in their heyday and Mississippi families grew their own vegetables and had a few chickens to produce  eggs and an occasional chicken dinner.

Seeing lighter side of heavy times
By Charles Dunagin, READ MORE > 9,862 Reads
On Thu, 03/26/2020 - 05:50 PM

OXFORD — Some people say you shouldn’t pass along and laugh at jokes about the current national crisis, but I can’t help it.

I can grieve, fret, worry and get aggravated  as much as  the average person. That goes for things over which I have no control, as well as things over which I do.

On Thu, 01/23/2020 - 11:47 AM

OXFORD — The likely November rematch between Cindy Hyde-Smith and Mike Espy for one of Mississippi’s U.S. Senate seats is a reminder that Mississippi lacks the power it once had at the nation’s Capitol.

Pondering the possibilities for 2020
By Charles Dunagin, READ MORE > 9,108 Reads
On Thu, 01/09/2020 - 11:06 AM

OXFORD — At least the new year, 2020, has a nice ring to it.

It sounds like a television program — ABC’s news magazine “20/20” — but it feels more like George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984.”
