Charleston High School is hosting summer league varsity and junior varsity basketball games every Thursday throughout the month of June.
While the Tigers and Lady Tigers often participate in summer league roundball play each off-season, CHS Athletic Director LaDon Taylor said it has always been at someone else's gym.
For the first time, the CHS Tiger's Den is the home site, with varsity basketball players from Independence, Lee Academy, Leflore County, North Delta School, Water Valley and West Tallahatchie traveling to Charleston to participate in what has been dubbed the "Summer Hoops Showdown."
"We're really excited," Taylor noted. "It's good for our basketball program and community, as well."
Taylor said each scheduled mini-game consists of two, 18-minute halves with a running clock for all but the final minute of the contest.
Certified Mississippi High School Activities Association officials work each game.
June 5 was the opening day of the CHS summer league games, and Taylor said the first contest tipped off at 10 a.m. and the final buzzer of the last game sounded about 5 p.m.
The public is welcome to attend each Thursday, he explained.
"We charge $5 admission, and you'll have basketball all day," he said.
Taylor said a concession stand is available.
Each week's schedule of mini-games will be compiled by Taylor and posted to social media pages of the Charleston coaches, as well as shared with The Sun-Sentinel for release. The schedule should be available on Mondays, he noted.
