Charleston police are searching for a man who escaped their custody while in handcuffs outside the Tallahatchie County Jail in Charleston early Wednesday afternoon.
Police Chief Kirby Griffin identified the escapee as Aderien Goliday of Charleston. Griffin said Goliday is a Black male in his early 20s. He was in handcuffs and wearing jeans, a green shirt and no shoes at the time he fled, the chief added.
Lawmen with the Charleston Police Department and Tallahatchie County Sheriff's Office searched for Goliday until the trail ran cold on Waverly Street, Griffin said, at which time the search was suspended.
"He is not believed to be armed or dangerous," Griffin noted.
The chief said Goliday had been picked up by police Wednesday afternoon on a charge of felon in possession of a firearm. A handgun allegedly in his possession was confiscated by police, Griffin added.
If anyone spots a suspicious man bearing Goliday's description, they are asked to call the Tallahatchie County Sheriff's Office at 662-647-5511 or Charleston City Hall at 662-647-5841.
In the meantime, everyone is encouraged to keep their vehicle doors locked.
