Bells will ring, buses will roll and young minds will experience both anxiety and anticipation when students return next week for the first day of classes in Charleston schools.
The Thursday, July 23, start for students in the East Tallahatchie School District is the earliest in recent history.
In 2025, students’ first day in the Charleston district was July 28. In 2024, it was Aug. 1. Not so long ago, students did not report until mid-August.
West Tallahatchie School District students will get to continue their summer vacation for nearly two weeks longer than their cross-county counterparts, not reporting until Wednesday, Aug. 5.
All schools in the county will close for Labor Day, but Charleston schools will be shuttered for the holiday both Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 7, while West Tallahatchie will take off Sept. 7 only.
The next scheduled extended respite will come during fall break, which occurs Monday through Friday, Oct. 5-9, in both school districts. Technically, in West Tallahatchie, Oct. 5 is a day of professional development and Oct. 6 the start of fall break. That may be true for staff, who must report to work on Oct. 5, but the distinction will be lost on the youngsters who are free the entire week.
Full school-year calendar schedules for both Tallahatchie County districts appear on Page 4B of The Sun-Sentinel’s annual Back to School supplement, which is included with this week’s print and e-editions of the newspaper. The special supplement also features uniform policies, supply lists and more.
A wealth of information also is available on district websites at www.etsd.k12.ms.us (East Tallahatchie) and www.wtsdschools.org (West Tallahatchie).
