Singing, fireworks and a ball drop are to be part of the festivities surrounding a public New Year’s Eve celebration in Charleston tonight, according to Mayor Sedrick Smith Sr.
The event will be conducted in front of City Hall, on the south side of Charleston Court Square, the mayor said.
The festivities are scheduled to get underway two hours before the big finale.
“We will have some open mic singing starting at 10 p.m.,” Smith said. “If anybody wants to come and sing their favorite song, they can.”
The mayor said singers are asked to call Charleston City Hall at 662-647-5841, or dial his number at 662-647-4171, to be placed on the list.
In addition, Smith said Sir Kendrick of Charleston High School is tentatively planned to perform, and there will be a live DJ.
Light refreshments will be provided in front of City Hall, the mayor added.
A fireworks show will get underway at 11:45.
“We will have an awesome fireworks show,” Smith said.
The countdown to the ball drop — the lighted ball was designed and handcrafted by the mayor himself — is scheduled to get underway just before midnight, culminating at 12 when 2025 gives way to 2026.
“We want folks to come out, gather around and have a good time while we prepare to welcome in the new year,” Smith said.
This free, annual Charleston celebration is open to the public.
