After an unscheduled open date Oct. 3 on what was supposed to be the night of the homecoming football game, the Charleston High School Tigers now turn their attention to two straight road contests beginning with a trip to Leland this Friday.
The 2-2 Tigers will travel to Washington County to face the 4-3 Leland High School Cubs in the Region 3-2A opener for both squads.
Last week, Leland defeated winless M.S. Palmer 36-8 in Marks. One week earlier, Leland was shellacked at home, 40-0, by the undefeated Simmons Blue Devils.
In their last game on Sept. 26, Class 2A Charleston was thumped 49-14 at Class 7A DeSoto Central in Southaven.
Charleston head coach Rasheed DeBerry had said that the open date last Friday, and the fact this week was fall break at the school, allowed the team extra time to concentrate on themselves, “to focus on getting better, mentally tougher, [handling] our assignments and being more technically sound.”
After Leland, the Tigers will be on the road again Oct. 17 when they travel to North Carrollton to take on the now 2-4 J.Z. George Jaguars in another regional tilt.
Charleston’s homecoming game on Oct. 24 will bring the Northside Gators of Shelby to Tiger Stadium for an important Region 3-2A showdown. Northside is presently 5-0.
Charleston will close out the regular season Oct. 30 with a Thursday night home game against M.S. Palmer.
