SUMNER — The annual Christmas Eve fireworks show will illuminate the skies over Cassidy Bayou here on Wednesday, Dec. 24.
The event is scheduled to start at 7.
Fireworks will be launched from the Cassidy Bayou bridge in the heart of town, and the display can best be viewed from the streets along the bayou north of the bridge.
The bridge will be closed to traffic starting at 6:45 p.m. Because regulations require that the public be kept a safe distance from the bridge during the show, boundaries will be established on both sides of the span, explained Sumner Town Clerk Toni Clark.
The public is asked to respect boundary markers and to remain outside marked areas, Clark said.
The event, an annual project of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department, is funded entirely through private donations, explained Sumner Mayor Jackson Webb.
“This is a community effort, so if anyone would like to donate, they can do so by making checks out to the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department and dropping them off with Toni Clark at the town hall,” Webb noted.
As usual, the holiday light show will be orchestrated and executed by professional technicians from LaFollette, Tennessee-based Pyro Shows.
Some people also use the occasion to light and launch dozens of Chinese lanterns from an area along the bank below Sumner Baptist Church, adding to the luminous spectacle above the quiet waters of Cassidy Bayou.
For more information about the show, or how to donate to help offset the expense, call Sumner Town Hall at 662-375-8773.
