Warm and pleasant greetings to all. We hope you are having a good week. It’s more fascinating when you’re “close-up” watching how technology and manual labor work together to harvest crops, especially sweet potatoes. Each year you discover something you didn’t recognize the year before when farming equipment is in operation. The same with beans, corn and cotton. Looking across the fields, it’s a beautiful sight and, hopefully, more bountiful.
Tallahatchie County Retired Teachers Association met virtually on Tuesday, Oct. 10, for its regular monthly meeting.
President Sevelda Taylor opened the meeting with greetings and a devotional. Attendance was good. Committee reports were given and the treasurer report approved. The fundraiser committee finalized plans for an upcoming event in November. Membership dues for 2023-24 are now payable.
The organization will sponsor a “Saturday Morning Pancake Breakfast” at the Williams Lodge Hall, West Main Street, on Saturday, Nov. 4. The fall fundraiser will benefit the organization’s Youth Scholarship program. You are invited to pick up or dine in between the hours of 7 and 10:30 a.m. A full menu will be listed later. We hope you will mark your calendar now and plan to participate. Your support will be appreciated.
Last week, the Brinkley brothers from Gallatin, Tennessee, spent Thursday and part of Friday with us. Sunday, on the way back to Gallatin, they stopped in for early lunch and another hug. We’ve missed three years consecutively visiting in person. Virtually speaking, it just doesn’t always get it! So we were particularly happy and blessed to be with them. It was MVSU homecoming weekend and brother Frank’s 60th class reunion program was during this time. This reunion is certainly one to remember. Greetings are sent your way from my brothers, Frank and Charles Brinkley.
Saturday evening, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m., a “Love Day” honoring Geraldine (Polly) Foxx will be held at Taylor Chapel Church. Come and show your love for her. Polly has given much in showing her own strength. She is compassionate about the support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and has spearheaded several activities over the years.
October is the month we’re likely to see the most about breast cancer. ACS says breast cancer is the most common concern of American women, except for skin cancer.
The average risk for a woman in the USA to develop breast cancer in her lifetime is 12%, or 1 in 8 chances. The chance of dying is 2.6%, or 1 in 38 chances. It’s so important to be aware of breast cancer with early detection. If you are aware of the signs and symptoms, risk factors and screening for breast cancer, you can help others and even save a life.
Keep it pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and give your support.
Tippo Community will hold a 2-mile cancer walk this Saturday, Oct. 28. This activity is from 9-10 a.m., gathering near the Tippo Post Office.
One other thing to mention: The First District of Tallahatchie County Association and its auxiliaries will have its fifth Sunday fellowship worship services with the Popular Springs Missionary Baptist on Oct. 29. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. followed by 11 a.m. services.
Enjoy the day. Be blessed.
