My day started out pretty funny Monday morning! I knew when I got out of bed that I had to hurry over to my dad’s to send in my weekly column before the deadline, so I jumped up and got dressed. I hurried over to my camper that I have sitting behind my dad’s house. I use the camper mostly for a home office, but occasionally I spend the night there, so it is fully equipped with all the necessities. I groggily exited my car and headed for the door of the camper and flung it open to rush inside. When the door flew open, something came balling out the door and I screamed like an ax murderer was after me!
A pretty little black and white cat ran past me and I grabbed my heart like Fred Sanford used to do! I was over here Saturday cutting the grass and had left the door open on the camper so it could get some fresh air in there. The door stayed open for at least an hour and when I went to leave, I just walked by and slammed it shut and never looked inside. I didn’t come over Sunday. I can imagine when I pulled up Monday, that cat was so glad to hear me coming. It sure opened my eyes Monday morning. I was definitely awake.
When I sat in my chair in front of the computer, I checked my Facebook page before doing anything else and I had a notification about my memories. I clicked on the notification and it took me to a post that my mother had posted a month before the fire. She was bragging about getting to see me for a little while because I was always so busy. It broke my heart.
True, I had a very demanding job in management and was at work most of the time. When I wasn’t at work, I had a husband and a house to take care of, but none of that seems important now. I should have made more time for my mother. When I was around her too much, we always seemed to butt heads. Now I know that the reason for our disagreements was the likeness in our manner. I never realized just how much I am like my mother and it gives me such pride.
Please take time out of your busy lives to enjoy the things that really matter. I know that my mother knew that I loved her, but I also know that I didn’t give her the priority that she deserved. I can’t have a “do-over” and it’s a very hard pill to swallow.
Keith and I had some guests for supper Sunday and I really enjoyed it. Kaye Corley and her grandson, Gunner (I hope I spelled that right), came over and we got in the pool for a while and then cooked on the grill. My husband is the “grill master” at my house, so he cooked some absolutely delicious chicken, ribs, sausage links and corn on the cob. I was in charge of the inside and I cheated just a little. I purchased some potato salad from town and didn’t have to cook anything. I got to sit and visit with my friend while Keith sweated and fought mosquitoes outside.
Little Gunner had apparently worked up an appetite while playing in the pool because he followed the grill master around until something was done enough for him to eat. Gunner is 2, so his vocabulary is quite fundamental. Keith would give him pieces of rib and he would gobble it down and then say “Bite!” It was adorable.
After we filled our bellies, Kaye and Gunner went home for the night and I got ready for bed. I knew that Monday, daddy had an appointment for his health checkup. All in all, it was a great night.
If you have a birthday coming soon or if you have had a birthday since my last column, here’s to you having a great one and I hope you have many more.
God has us all in His hands and He will never let us go. Remember, the Lord is coming back, so please be ready.
