I think that I have been on this computer all week! I have come to find out that it is much easier to shop online than to fight traffic and bad attitudes. Whatever happened to the art of customer service? I have managed several different stores and it seemed like I was always having to remind my crew to smile and be nice. Being good to people goes a long way — not just for your business, but as a person.
I had to make a trip to Southaven to purchase items to sell in my store. I’ve been hanging around Cascilla so much here lately that I forgot what it was like to get out and shop. It wasn’t that bad and everyone that I came in contact with seemed to be content. The streets are starting to get congested because of the season, but I didn’t see any accidents or any disagreements. I got a late start because I had to run to Grenada and purchase some precooked food for a family of our community that lost a loved one. I think it is our responsibility as a member of the community to provide a nice meal for the survivors of a death. Grief is a hard thing, and anything that I can do to help someone through it is an easy choice.
While checking Facebook Monday morning, I was so sad to hear the news of the passing of Mr. David Hargett of Charleston. I have known him all of my life and he was my principal in my middle school years. After graduating, I ended up working under his supervision at the East Tallahatchie School District for several years. He attended Charleston Church of God and he didn’t just go to church to warm the pew. He was involved in many activities that helped out his community and always had words of encouragement and usually a smile on his face. Charleston lost a great Christian man! Please be in prayer for his wife, Carol, and his daughter, Candi, and any other family member that is suffering. It’s hard enough to face death, but to have to face it close to the holidays is a whole different thing.
I was so disappointed in myself because I didn’t get my store open on Saturday. I just didn’t have enough time to get everything completed. I know that it will happen, though, with God’s help and my determination. I’m waiting on some things to come in through the mail. I have a few kinks to work out, but other than that, I should be open by the time this column is read. My shelves are stocked with things that might save these folks out here from having to run to town and I have drinks, candies, chips, etc., to fill the hunger pains while you are waiting on a meal.
If everything goes as planned, I will be cooking fish this Friday night from 5-8 p.m. It won’t be a full-fledged buffet, but I will have fish, fries, slaw and bread. Come on out and eat with me. I will have some tables inside if you want to sit down and eat. If you don’t have time to sit, just grab a to-go plate and enjoy it at home.
I’ve taken up enough of your time today. I have to go over to Daddy’s and work on his well, and I’m not sure how long that is going to take. I’ve watched some videos on how to do it, but until I actually get my hands dirty, I can’t be sure if I can do it. My daddy taught me to at least try before I say I can’t. His favorite words to me were “if they can do it, so can you”! For 50 years, those words have been true and I don’t intend on letting anything stop me today! Who knows, if I fix this well, I can go into business and make a small fortune! I’ll let y’all know how it goes.
Until next week, remember that the Lord is coming back, so be ready!
