The Charleston Magnolia Garden Club has held several meetings in preparation for the annual Flower Show, scheduled for May 7 at the First Presbyterian Church Family Life Center. This year’s theme, “Proud to be an American,” will be a culminating event of the clubs’ talents, memories and honor to those who have passed before us in preserving and protecting the heritage and freedom we enjoy daily. The divisions will include horticulture, design, botanical arts and educational exhibits.
The event is free and open to the public from 2-4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
The CMGC met in February to begin the groundwork for the upcoming flower show. Carol Bullard and Celia Williamson demonstrated how to design a functional exhibition table and had examples of other designs and elements to consider. It was voted to continue with the community garden, leasing lots available for planting this season.
For Arbor Day, redbud trees were planted at the cemetery and the Wellness Center. The CMGC had more entries in the State Flower Show than any other club in Mississippi.
The March meeting was host to Debbie Cooper, president of the Garden Clubs of Mississippi, 2015-2017, and former president of the Mississippi Flower Show Judges Council. She is a member of Greenwood Garden Club and Design Masters Study Club. She is an accomplished floral designer and is known for her creative and abstract designs.
Mrs. Cooper demonstrated three types of designs that will be applicable in this year’s flower show. They include Spatial Thrust, Reflective Design and Creative Line Mass. She encouraged all members, making each design appear effortless, and used the same container to demonstrate each.
The April CMGC was led by President Carol Bullard explaining requirements for horticulture display with examples given. She then proceeded to demonstrate further examples in the botanical arts, floral designs and types of artistic crafts that can be used. Flower show procedures and staging were discussed at length. The Mississippi Garden Clubs state convention is in Brandon. Submitting designs from our club will be Carol Bullard, Allison Ashmore, Sassy Mauldin, D’Ann Carr and Celia Williamson. The entire show will be petite designs with our club having the most entrants. Set-up for the CMGC flower show will begin May 5.
CMGC is a member of the Hills and Delta District, The Garden Clubs of Mississippi Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs Inc., and the National Garden Clubs Inc.
Again, we invite all to attend he Standard National Garden Club Flower Show, “Proud to be an American,” to be held May 7, from 2-4 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church Family Life Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
