Our youngsters have been showing up and showing out in the most wonderful ways.
Lilly Brooks Flautt was recently inducted into the National Honor Society. I was getting ready to mention she had a recent modeling event in New York City, but I’m not. Instead, I’m talking Honor Society and her softball skills, and the list is too long, and the same with her sisters.
Greenlee Robinette made all kinds of folks proud when she finished third in junior varsity 3K cross-country for the state. The course, with lots of uphill, didn’t slow our girl down.
The Pillow Academy crowd met up at our new Sumner-Bailey Garden for Football Friday Decades Day.
Coming soon: Square Fitness gym right next to the Sumner Drug is expected to open before Christmas. Owner Sonja Pennington says she and husband Paul will offer a variety of cardio machines and other gym machines to meet a variety of health needs. Sonja, who is also my primary care physician, is meeting a great health care need for our community as well as local jobs for contractors. Johnny Jones did all electrical along with some of the town crew. Joe Morris handled the AC. The furthest contractor was out of Clarksdale, Peyton Collins, the general contractor who replaced the roof, tore out and rebuilt everything. Sonja and Paul’s two children did their share of painting and labor.
On Sunday, our new pastor, Brother Zak, had my attention preaching from Ezekiel 37:1-14. (A little history: One of my favorite verses is just before what he preached Sunday, Ezekiel 36:26, about replacing a heart of stone with one of flesh.)
So, Brother Zak preached for an hour about bringing dried-up bones to life. It’s easy to kinda skip right over that part except when you have a preacher explain it this way, or my take; life can be so hard, sometimes it can beat you down. If you let go of your pain and misery and allow God to breathe life into you again, you can become whole again. That requires you to quit trying to fix everything yourself and let God do the work. Yes sir, he was speaking right into my ear.
Just my observation: In the past, there have been more and more Christmas decorations featuring Santa, the colorful, lively children’s comic hero, and not so much Jesus. Wouldn’t this be a great year to welcome Jesus back to His holiday? My very, very favorite Bible verse is when Mary “pondered all these things in her heart.”
Correction: In my last column, I spoke about my net grandson’s Navy ship, the John H. Lucas. Well, it is not John, it’s the Jack H. Lucas. John is one of my old military buddies who passed away and was much respected, so I was just thinking of him.
Salute, Jack. Salute, John.
