A note of correction from a prior column a few weeks ago: Mike Mills actually started the Christmas Eve fireworks in Sumner.
On an outing, he ran into a fellow in the import/export business who sold fireworks, was invited on a trip and ended up with some surplus fireworks.
As a volunteer firefighter and local farmer living next door to John Whitten, Mike got together with John, and John made the fireworks tubes that are still used to this day.
The volunteer fire department has always funded the fireworks while the Garden and Civic clubs support the tree and building lights.
Those volunteer firefighters give their all to protect us, so please donate for next year’s event. Drop off checks at Sumner Town Hall made out to the volunteer fire department.
