We met this last week to get our year started off, assigning duties such as desserts for each month as well as those each week for our quilters. We join forces on some of the things since some of our members are also quilters. We also choose someone for each month’s devotion for our meetings.
Our devotion this month was given by Sylvia Cole and it centered around the scripture in 1 Corinthians 6:12-13, where Paul gives instructions on the food we are to eat. He says all things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. He said food is for the stomach, and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord and the Lord is for the body.
Paul was bringing to these people a completely new way of salvation from what they had used for hundreds of years and he would have to go over it time and time again until they could understand and believe. They had always had a lot of rules they could go by in the food they could and could not eat, and Paul was trying to explain it to them.
There were some who thought they should be able to eat anything, and some that did not think they should eat certain things. He told them here that everything was lawful for him to eat, but that did not mean that he was at liberty to do so. As an example, Sylvia said that it was lawful to eat all the ice cream you wanted, but it wasn’t the best thing to do because it could make you sick, and would certainly make you fat. There are many things in this world that are in that category. One thing you will notice in the word of God are the things that you could do and the things you could not do.
One time, Paul told a group he was talking to that he could eat meat, nothing was unlawful for him, but he said, “If my eating meat will cause one person to stumble, I will eat no meat as long as I live.” That lets us know that we are to live in such a way that our living will bring others into His kingdom.
This is not limited to food, but in every area of our lives.
Our fruit baskets were taken to James and Ellen McCathren, Bro. Ray Legge and Billy and Martha Holmes. As always, these people will be prayed for, asking God for His comfort to sustain them.
We had several members of our community come as our guests to hear Daniel Pittman bring us up to date on the progress being made to bring internet service by TVIfiber to our community.
Due to having our visitors, we all brought snacks, so the eating time was enjoyed by all.
