I hope you had a happy Labor Day weekend.
Love and sympathy to the Joyce McCullar Courtney family of Scobey. Joyce was a devoted mother and proud grandmother. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service in Grenada with Rev. Rickey Harris officiating. Interment followed in the Wayside Cemetery.
Love and sympathy to the Howard Eugene “Gene” McMillian family of Maben. Gene, age 70, passed away surrounded by his family on Aug. 28. He was born in Cleveland on Aug. 18, 1954, to the late Howard Powell and Catherine Clemons McMillian. He is survived by Ann, his wife of 47 years; his three daughters, Cindy (Justin) Robertson of DeKalb, Amanda (Michael) Gilliland of Eupora and Heather Harmon of Houston; six grandsons and two great-granddaughters. Gene was raised up in Tillatoba and attended school at Oakland.
Visiting us Monday afternoon through Wednesday was our friend, Susan Bell from Caledonia. She brought some delicious food she had cooked and some her son, Jordan, had cooked. Thank you, Susan and Jordan.
We were without electricity all Thursday night and part of Friday morning. Thank goodness for our generator. I have to have my oxygen. I think our little storm we had Thursday afternoon may have caused it.
“He’s exceptional,” says Jean Durham about their new grandson. It's Mark’s daughter who gave birth to a big boy that weighed 11 pounds, 14 ounces.
Daughter Donna came up and visited with Susan Bell while she was here.
Lila Myric went to her heart doctor last Tuesday and her heart rate was a low 47. They want it to be 60 or more. Lila said the doctor took her off one of her meds because she thinks that’s the reason it’s too low. Everything else was good, and Lila said she goes back in three months so they can check it again. She also has to keep track of her blood pressure until she goes back. Praying for you, Lila.
Martha Box said her sweet son, Ben Box, had to come to Spains to rescue his momma one morning. She rang up $130 worth of groceries, but all of her money and cards were at home! She said the stuff that happened to her last Monday made it feel like Friday the 13th all day long. She said she even had to break three dates, even a boyfriend date. Oh, no, Martha!
Martha said she was busy but got nothing complete last week. They brought Jesse’s wife, Jodi Wortham, home from the hospital. Prayers are needed for all, she said.
Martha sent brother Ronnie Wortham back to Texas Thursday morning. Martha said it was so hot that when she landed home, she sang out “Send Down the Rain Lord.” And He did! “It felt so good,” she said, even offering praises on the porch with the miracle of rain coming down. Your writer says, “God is good all the time, Martha!”
Belated happy birthday to Mary Franklin, who celebrated the 28th.
Happy birthday to Waylon Dukes, our grandson, on the 5th, Emily Donovan and Nancy Kirk on the 8th, Marilyn Scallion Grantham on the 9th and Sue Martin on the 11th.

Recipe for the week: “Easy Peanut Butter Fudge”
Combine 2 cups of sugar, half a cup light corn syrup and 1/2 cup milk. Cook until mixture reaches softball stage. Remove from heat and add 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1 tablespoon butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat until cool then add 1/2 cup of pecans. Pour into buttered pan and cut into squares.
Thought for the day: Success is not always measured by how far you go, but by how far you’ve come. Keep going.
