“Show Me the Money! And How to Keep More of It.” That’s the title of an upcoming FREE workshop being sponsored by the Oakland Area Chamber of Commerce. It is set for Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. until noon, at 304 Holly St. in Oakland (the former Presbyterian church).
It is being led by Michael Gray of Grays Power Supply in Oakland.
Michael is Oakland’s leading entrepreneur who has built his numerous businesses without going into debt. He has an amazing story and will be sharing his financial knowledge. All the chamber asks is that you register so they will know how many to plan for.

The chamber is also sponsoring a fundraiser for the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. This is called “Vroom Vroom Touch a Truck” and there will be fire trucks, a helicopter, tractors, 18-wheelers, police and sheriff’s department vehicles, dump trucks and more.
There is no admission fee, but donations will be asked to fill the fireman’s boot. Crafters are also welcome at no charge. If you have a big truck or vehicle you want to be in the event, contact Linda at the information above. It’s gonna be fun, y’all!
The Crenshaw sisters, Donnie C. Toole, Margaret C. Wilbourn and Louise C. Arnold attended the 95th birthday celebration of Freda Harper held at The Main Event and catered by Hi Cotton in Grenada Saturday, Aug. 27.
Freda and her late husband, Bill, and her family have been friends of the Crenshaw family for years. The party was attended by many, many friends and family, as stated by Louise Arnold. Freda is such a beautiful lady at 95 and I can only imagine how beautiful she was as a young lady.
The Garner Harper Funeral Home was purchased and has been turned into an awesome venue for parties, weddings and meetings! It is a wonderful place to have a party!
Josh Harrison sang “On the Wings of a Dove” at Pine Grove Baptist Church Sunday. His mother, Ginger Harrison, sent me a video and he did an excellent job. It made this old woman cry! Josh also played the guitar while singing.
Faye Hartley and daughter, Kristie, went to Rowland Hartley’s football game Thursday night. He is playing pee wee football at school. I think Faye and Kristi are self-appointed cheerleaders for Rowland.
Sam Pullen went to Oxford Monday morning where they took a biopsy of his throat and his stomach and will know in a few days the result. Praying for good results, Sam.
J.R Dukes and his daddy, Bubba Dukes, placed second Sunday at the fish tournament at Enid Lake.
Neighbors Tommy and Debbie McCool said they had another quiet weekend. They had planned on going to visit their son, Christopher McCool and family in Senatobia, but grandsons were out playing golf so they decided to wait and go another time.
Martha Box attended Tillatoba Baptist Church Sunday morning and witnessed a wonderful experience, Braxton Dukes’ baptism. To see his joyful response as he walked back to the family was amazing. Braxton’s parents are Jimmy and Nichole Dukes. Then, she said Bro. Rickey preached such a spirit-filled teaching leading message.
Your writer rode to Batesville with daughter Donna Garripoli Friday. We went to Lowe’s and they had big fans all over the store blowing and also big fans at the Cotton Warehouse. All that dust stirred up my sinuses and I got sick later.
While in Batesville, we stopped at the jewelry store and I purchased a birthstone necklace for great-granddaughter Haven Rose Dukes’ second birthday. Took meds and went to bed when we got back home. Went to grandson Brewer Deck’s game Saturday morning at Kirk and sat in that hot sun and got sick again. We were back home by dinner. I took some more meds and slept until 8 that night. I think I’m on the road to recovery this Monday morning.
Please pray for Bonnie Alexander Sanders Showers’ family. Visitation was Sunday, Aug. 28, at Spring Hill Baptist Church from 4 until 5 p.m. and the funeral service was at 5 p.m. with Bro. Courtney Selvy conducting. Burial followed at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.

Love and condolences to the Joe Dean Wiggins family. Joe Dean, 78, of Bartlett, Tennessee, passed away Aug. 26 in Germantown. He was born in Tallahatchie County to Archie and Jewel Wiggins on March 29, 1944.
Joe Wiggins was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Jewel Wiggins, and his brother, George Wiggins. He is survived by two daughters, Sonja Mercer (Joel) and Dana Huffman (Lee); four sisters, Gay Hardy (Larry), Ava Staten (Robert), Judy Cole (Bob) and Nell Bloodworth (Keith); seven grandchildren, Devon Huffman, Fischer Huffman, Samantha Olds, Alexandria Hamilton, Kelsey Mercer, Rachel Watson and Savanah Mercer; and six great-grandchildren.
Belated happy birthday to Johnny Jackson on the 29th of August. Starting off with our September birthdays is little miss Elena Young, who will be 2 on the 1st, and Tommy Parker also celebrates the 1st; Jack Bowman celebrates his 6th birthday the 2nd, and Annette Ford also celebrates the 2nd; Susan Howe celebrates the 3rd; and a special birthday wish to grandson Waylon Dukes on the 5th. Recipe for the week: Japanese Fruit Pie
1 stick of oleo or butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vinegar
1/2 cup coconut
1/2 cup pecans
1/2 cup raisins
Mix well. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
